How to Deal with Garden Moles: The Trap That Kills Moles Painlessly

1.The Putange Trap: The Best Technique

The Putange trap is a purely mechanical device that’s incredibly simple to use and works wonders. If you’re looking to kill the moles that are tearing up your grass, this is the perfect solution to protect your garden, preserve your soil, and keep these pests at bay !

This effective anti-mole trap comes in three parts:

• The trap itself (a pincer)
• The trigger
• A tool to spread the trap open so you can insert the trigger

It’s very easy to use. Once you’ve set it up, all you have to do is dig a hole above a molehill until you can see the mole’s tunnels.

You’ll usually find an entrance and an exit, and that’s where you’ll place your traps. You’ll need several, depending on how many molehills you have.

Place a trap at both the entrance and the exit of each molehill, and you’ll see the next day that if the mole passed through, it will be caught.

This is the most effective trap available. The Putange trap is a traditional mole trap that delivers a swift, lethal blow, ensuring the moles don’t suffer.

It’s non-polluting, requires no power source, and offers a long-lasting, affordable solution

When you purchase this metal mole trap from a store, you should let it sit in the ground for several days to “age” before you use it.

Otherwise, it will give off a metallic scent that the mole can detect. The mole will then cover the trap with dirt and flee, digging a new underground tunnel in your yard or nearby lawn.

Although nearly blind, a mole has a sharp sense of smell and reacts quickly, which often causes it to escape and create a new molehill on your property.

Let’s move on to the next trap for an effective way to get rid of moles.

2.The Scissor Trap for Easy Mole Removal

The scissor trap is the next best option after the Putange trap. The scissor trap kills moles instantly and painlessly.

It’s also very effective, but it takes up a bit more space and requires more careful preparation, such as digging into the molehill properly.

Don’t worry, though—it’s still a very simple and convenient trap.

The goal is to place it in a molehill you’ve dug out. There’s a trigger on top of the pincer. As soon as a mole passes underneath it in the tunnel, it lifts the trigger and is instantly killed.

The trap kills moles with a quick, clean snap, without causing them to suffer, all while keeping your soil safe. The point isn’t to make them suffer, but to get rid of moles for good.

This is a trap I used myself for years, although today I use the Putange trap. The scissor trap requires no power source and is purely mechanical, which is one of its major benefits.

3.The Mole Gun: A Powerful Method

Have you ever heard of the mole gun?

It’s also called a mole pistol, two names for a product designed to efficiently eliminate moles.

How does this trap work?

It’s very simple. It also uses a trigger, but unlike natural and mechanical solutions, it requires a blank cartridge to operate and instantly remove the mole.

When a mole advances through its underground tunnel, pushing dirt with its nose, it triggers the mechanism, causing the cartridge to explode.

The pressure from the cartridge is so powerful that it kills the mole instantly.

A word of caution: When you set this trap, remember to put on the safety ring to avoid the risk of an accidental explosion in your hands. It’s a very effective trap for killing moles, but its drawback is that you need a lot of cartridges, which can be an issue if you have many moles to hunt on your property.

It’s a very good trap, but if you have the choice, it’s better to go with mechanical traps as a durable and reusable solution that can last a lifetime, as long as you don’t lose them.

Here are the steps to use it:

• Put on the safety ring for protection
• Unscrew the cap at the end of the trap
• Push the cartridge into the trap and replace the end cap
• Dig above a molehill and place the trap in the mole’s tunnel
• Arm the trigger
• Remove the safety ring from the trap
• Cover the molehill with a slate and some dirt to prevent light from entering the tunnel

Let’s move on to the next trap, which is also quite powerful.

4.The Plunger Mole Trap to Kill Moles in Their Path

The plunger mole trap is a mechanical trap that works similarly to the scissor trap. To kill moles, it strikes from above, positioned directly over the molehill.

When a mole travels through its underground tunnel—often in search of plants or to maintain its complex network—it activates the trap’s trigger, which then slams down on it.

It’s a very easy trap to use and one that kills the mole quickly. Unfortunately, it can cause the animal to suffer if it doesn’t die instantly, as the trap’s spikes can cause severe injuries.

It’s a clever, sophisticated mole trap, but I will always recommend the traditional Putange trap, as it’s very simple and affordable. Still, any means of getting rid of moles and reclaiming your lawn quickly is a good one.

5.Mole Poison

Mole poison is another technique that works well, assuming the mole actually eats it. If this is a method you want to use, it’s an option, but its effectiveness is uncertain and depends on the mole’s ability to detect the product.

Many big-box stores will sell you mole poisons/repellents, but we strongly advise against them due to their negative impact on the natural balance of your soil and on local wildlife.

For one, the product poisons your soil, disrupting its natural balance, and for another, it causes the mole to suffer for a long time before it finally dies.

While poison can be effective for killing moles, it seriously damages your soil quality and can be dangerous for your pets. It’s a product to be used with extreme caution.

6.Grandpa’s Technique for Killing Moles

Just a few years ago, this was a well-known trick that was sometimes used in gardens. People would mention anti-mole traps, strong-smelling repellents, and natural tricks like dog hair, or even unsuitable solutions like firecrackers…

But have you ever heard of this grandpa’s trick with a chair and a book? It was a grandpa’s technique that got the job done.

The idea was to sit in your garden on a chair with a good book and read all afternoon while you watched for moles, so you could chase them off immediately when they popped up.

Moles aren’t sociable, but they do come out of their tunnels and create molehills regularly. You just had to wait for them with a small rifle. As soon as one came out, a well-placed shot was all it took.

Today, this technique is no longer used to kill moles, but my grandpa, who loved taking care of his garden, was a fan.

He loved reading outside but hated seeing moles in his yard. It’s up to you to decide what you’re willing to do to get rid of the moles and tunnels that are destroying your property.

7.Firecrackers: A Bad Idea for Killing Moles?

You might see videos of people putting firecrackers in molehills to kill moles. This popular trick doesn’t work and can even damage your soil and harm your plants nearby.

The technique might work if the firecracker is powerful enough and you place it directly on the mole, but that’s what the “gun trap” mole trap does.

The firecrackers you find in joke shops just make noise, and that’s their only purpose. You won’t be able to kill moles that way.

Let’s move on to the final technique that gets a lot of attention in online discussions and YouTube videos.

8.Broken Glass Because Moles Are Hemophiliacs?

Broken glass is the last method that is sometimes mentioned to solve this problem. Why do people tell you to use glass shards in molehills ?

Because they mistakenly believe that moles are hemophiliacs and are vulnerable to bleeding, when in fact they have a natural ability to heal without any issues.

But this isn’t true. While a mole might bleed, these wounds won’t be fatal and will only cause the animal unnecessary suffering.

Putting broken glass in mole tunnels has never been an effective or humane technique for getting rid of these animals, so don’t listen to these myths.
